Interfacing a Shortwave Radio
to the SE-3
The SE-3 Mk IV is an external synchronous detector and audio amplifier that can
be used with any shortwave radio. The radio may need an interface kit to feed the
SE-3, which requires a 455 kHz IF input for operation. The interface kit in no way
changes the operation of the receiver, it only takes the last IF, just before detection,
and mixes it either down or up in frequency to 455 kHz. This interface kit, called
the MIX-3, may also require a buffer amp with a clean-up IF filter to remove any
undesired mixing products or local oscillator signals. The MIX-3 sells for $95.00
and the BUF-3 is $50.00. These are usually installed in the radio in question, but
sometimes are mounted externally in a shielded mini-box.
Comments on radios that have been used with the SE-3 Mk III:
-
General Comments:
The only feature that my not function with the SE-3 detector/amplifier
is squelch. If the radio's squelch circuit mutes the radio's internal audio, it will
continue to do that, but it will not mute the SE-3 audio. All radios will
have passband tuning on AM with the SE-3 by adjusting the receiver main tuning knob
for USB, LSB, or anywhere in between.
-
AOR 7030:
Stock IF output from DIN connector feeds SE-3 directly. Maintains
more reliable lock with full LSB or USB offset than built-in sync detector.
-
Collins R-390A:
Stock IF output feeds the SE-3 directly. Radio will perform
better if certain Sherwood modifications are made to the IF, power supply, and possibly
the crystal oscillator module. The standard Collins filters are excellent. SE-3 additionally
provides product detection for SSB, RTTY, and CW with AGC operational.
-
Watkins-Johnson HF-1000:
Stock IF output directly feeds the SE-3, which
provides selectable sideband offset in synchronous AM, unlike internal detector.
Functions extremely well with variable bandwidth control in HF-1000.
-
JRC NRD-515:
Has 455 kHz IF output, but radio requires a
$20.00 buffer amplifier
in the 515 to eliminate distortion from existing AM detector. This is an
extremely smooth and quiet sounding radio with the SE-3 III. Additional IF filters
from Sherwood enhance receiver performance. Up to six filters can be installed in
the radio with Sherwood accessories.
-
JRC NRD-525:
Receiver requires that a wire and a coax cable be added to
the set in order to bring 455 kHz IF out to rear panel, an easy field modification.
Better filters can be added to the filter board, but these are not field installable.
The poor audio fidelity bandwidth of tgghe stock radio is improved dramatically by
a factor of three.
-
JRC NRD-535(D):
Receiver needs extensive modification of mother and IF
board to bring out 455 kHz signal. Also requires BUF-3 buffer amp with clean-up IF
filter. Is usually installed internally on the bottom of the motherboard. The poor
stock audio fidelity bandwidth is dramatically improved by a factor of three. Our
SE-3 provides tremendously better lock performance than the internal sync detector
in the 535D.
-
Icom R-70 / R-71:
These fine radios require the MIX-3 down converter. Sherwood
does not provide any additional filters at this time.
-
Icom R-75:
This fine radio require the BUF-3 buffer amp.
The SE-3 Mk IV needs a custom alignment for the R-75.
-
Icom R-9000:
This fantastic radio becomes perfect with the addition of
the SE-3 and our accessory filters. A MIX-3 and BUF-3 are required to down convert
the 10.7 Mhz IF. Note: The 10.7 MHz IF output on the rear of the radio is not
the proper IF output for the SE-3. Additionally, we offer 6, 4, and 3 kHz 10.7 MHz
IF filters and a logic board to enable these filters. Stock filters are 15, 9, and
3 kHz in AM mode. These bandwidths remain, but we also add 6kHz in the CUSTOM position. The switching mode is simply a logic
ground. Custom filters can be enabled by a miniature toggle switch on the rear panel,
or through an RCA (phono) jack on the back of the radio. We have mounted an external
toggle switch on the front panel of the rack-mount SE-3 for some customers.
Price for all of these custom modifications: $590.00 US installed
-
Kenwood R-5000:
This radio requires the MIX-3 to down convert the IF to
455 kHz. While Sherwood does not offer any accessory filters, replacing the stock
4-pole AM filter with the optional Kenwood 9-pole AM filter is virtually a must.
-
Racal 6790GM:
This radio has a stock IF output to directly feed the SE-3.
This is a mil spec radio with excellent specifications, and it performs very well
with the SE-3. We offer a range of accessory filters from 16 kHz to 250 Hz bandwidth.
Especially desirable are the 2.1 kHz SSB crystal filter, and our 3.5, 6, and 8 kHz
AM filters. These filters just plug into the standard filter sockets. User is required
to run the internal BYTE test after installation for automatic filter setup. Our
Medium speed AGC time constant modification is desirable for better SSB operation.
-
Drake R-8, R-8A, R-7, R-7A, R-4(C), R-5245:
All Drake receivers need a
MIX-3 upconverter to hetrodyne the 50-kHz IF to 455 kHz. The BUF-3 is also required.
There is room in the R-8 series to install them internally. For the R-4 and R-7 series,
the converter must be installed in an external shielded mini-box, due to lack of
space.
Pomona die-cast box: $45.00 US extra
The R-8(A) is greatly enhanced by our synchronous detection, compared to its stock sync detector.
-
Field Installation:
While we prefer to install the MIX-3 and BUF-3 at our
factory, we can supply detailed field instructions for the same price for overseas
customers. Instructions include schematics and pictures to aid installation.
-
Rack Option:
Normal cabinet-model SE-3s can be converted to rack mount
in the field.
The rack kit: $49.00 US
The rack mount option provides room for additional logic and control switches. Examples of such are: activating relay-switched accessory
RF-input bandpass filters and high-intercept RF preamps.
Installation requires removing the existing front panel, and installing the rack panel,
and exchanging the top cover.
